Creative Santa Fe: Strengthening Santa Fe's Creative Economy

Strengthening Santa Fe's Creative Economy

News
The Santa Fe Railyard Center for Arts & Creativity

May 30, 2008 | Santa Fe, NM – Supporting and developing the creative sector is a cornerstone to maintaining a robust economic environment. The best practices of public and private nonprofit arts and culture facilities across the United States show that the most efficient means of providing arts and creative sector support is through a centrally located multi-tenant facility. The proposed Santa Fe Railyard Center for Arts & Creativity implements, in a concrete way, the City of Santa Fe's economic development strategy for arts, culture, and creative industries.

In addition to providing a home for workforce, career, and business development programs, the Center will provide creative businesses and artists with affordable office and work space.

Construction Costs

Creative Santa Fe plans to renovate the former La Puerta building in the south Railyard area—a building owned by the City of Santa Fe and available for lease.

Preliminary cost estimates for renovating the property and building-out tenant and program spaces is projected at approximately $2.7 million. The preliminary renovation plans encompass green building modifications that are required of City-owned properties.

Creative Santa Fe is seeking:

  • $900,000 from a variety of funding streams within the City of Santa Fe to restore basic infrastructure (HVAC, plumbing and electrical service) to the building;
  • a combined total of $900,000 from New Mexico State Representatives and Senators serving Santa Fe to partially fund the build-out of programmatic space within the facility;
  • the remaining $900,000 will be raised by Creative Santa Fe through donations and grants, to complete renovations and develop and initiate programs and services in the facility.

Operating Expenses

Creative Santa Fe has developed a balanced budget for the ongoing operations of the Center. The programs and the facility have been designed to be self-sustaining through earned income from the rental of offices and studios. The remaining programmatic expenses for economic development, likely to amount to less than $100,000 per year, will be offset by modest fees for classes and workshops and partially subsidized by a mix of public and private funding. Therefore, it is important that the renovation of the facility be completed in one phase.

Who Benefits?

We anticipate that the facility and programs will impact several thousand local individuals every year. Local businesses, artists, craftspeople, musicians, and many others working in all media will find programs and facilities that are responsive to their needs at the Railyard Center.
