Unesco Creative Cities Conference, Creative Tourism; A Global Conversation
Feb. 28, 2008 | Santa Fe, NM – The City of Santa Fe in partnership with UNESCO Creative Cities
is hosting an international conference "Creative Tourism; A Global Conversation." The conference will be held 9/29/08 - 10/2/08 at the new civic center. We will be hosting delegates from the other eight designated Creative Cities, all members of the Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity; Montreal, Canada; Aswan, Egypt; Berlin, Germany; Bologna, Italy; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Sevilla, Spain; Popayan, Colombia; and Edinburgh, Scotland.
Creative Santa Fe is assisting the city with soliciting providers of creative tourism experiences for inclusion in an online directory, both to showcase local businesses and artists, and to provide an example for the other creative cities. Creative tourism is travel directed toward an engaged and authentic experience, with participative learning in the arts, heritage, or special character of a place, and it provides a connection with those who reside in this place and create this living culture."
So going to a gallery and then eating an enchilada dinner is not creative tourism; creating a clay pot and preparing and enjoying an enchilada dinner with a group of people is creative tourism.Other examples are taking photographs, plastering a church, and attending a drumming class.
Local ceramic artist Heidi Loewen hosts students from all over the globe to throw pots in her studio. Her sample web entry (under development) can be viewed here.
